Former Erie, Pa., Mayor Rick Filippi is trying to force a city insurer to cover more than $300,000 in attorney’s fees incurred during Filippi’s successful fight against corruption charges. In December 2004, Filippi and two of his associates were indicted on charges that they tried to profit from non-public information in a land deal, according to the Erie Times-News. All three were acquitted in March, but the city’s professional liability insurer, United National Insurance, refused to pay Filippi’s legal fees. In response, Filippi, who left office in January, has filed a writ of summons with Erie County Common Pleas Court to force the company to pay.
