Inflation concerns have reignited after an unexpectedly high jump in consumer prices at the start of 2025.

U.S. consumer prices grew 0.5% in January, the biggest increase since August 2023, according to Reuters. Economists polled by Reuters had predicted a lesser increase of 0.3%. The uptick marks the fourth consecutive month of inflation increases. Compared with January 2024, consumer prices were up 3.0%, according to the Labor Department, and higher than the expected 2.9%.

Inflation has been a major topic and concern over the past year in the U.S., including among local government employees. A poll commissioned by DailyPay in November of last year found that 73% of government workers said inflation had a negative impact on their finances in 2024, with 52% reporting that they were having a harder time paying bills compared with 2023.

The impact of inflation has differed from city to city, with some localities hit harder than others by the rising price of goods. A new study by WalletHub, a personal finance company, ranked metropolitan areas based on their Consumer Price Index changes from January 2024 to January 2025.
