September 30, 2014
Law enforcement agencies looking for a new way to securely transport prisoners between facilities may want to consider the 2015 Ford Transit Prisoner Transport Vehicle concept, or Transit PTV, as a potential future option. The Transit PTV is built on a 2015 Ford Transit van chassis. The concept is designed to transport 12 prisoners in three separate compartments, and the driver and partner are separated from the prisoners by a secure divider.
The vehicle features an upfit prisoner conveyance system that Ford Motor Company created with Warminster, Pa.-based Havis Prisoner Transport Solutions. The one-of-a-kind concept vehicle was developed with input from Ford’s Police Advisory Board to demonstrate Transit’s flexibility for law enforcement needs. The van offers a variety of configuration choices to ensure that fleet buyers get a product that meets their specific needs.
“Local governments, state agencies and any other customers would purchase a Transit from Ford and work with an upfitter. Delivery timing would vary depending on the scope of the customization work being done by the upfitter. The great thing about working with upfitters is that the vehicles could be completely custom-built for each municipality — must-have features are up to them, “ says Jessica Enoch who is in Dearborn, Mich.-based Ford Motor Company’s Product Communications department. The Transit model is available in three roof heights, two wheelbases, three lengths and four body styles. It provides a range of powertrain choices with a lineup that includes two gasoline engine options, an E85-capable 3.7-liter V6 and an available 3.5-liter EcoBoost powertrain. A 3.2-liter Power Stroke diesel model is also available in the 2015 Ford Transit lineup. The Transit makes extensive use of boron steel, which has undergone more than 7 million miles of durability testing.
Transit PTV joins the Police Interceptor sedan and utility vehicle, Special Service Police Sedan, F-150 Special Service Vehicle and Expedition Special Service Vehicle in the Ford law enforcement vehicle lineup.
