We can be heroes
This month, the Newark, N.J., Police Department observed National Police Week with a display of crime-fighting technology. Batman and his Batmobile (a modified Camaro), the department’s Scuba Unit, and its Segway appeared at the event. National Peace Officer Day was created by federal legislation and signed into law by President John F. Kennedy in 1961. Since then, it has been observed every year as National Police Week, to honor all law enforcement officers on the week of May 15. In this photo taken by B. Jones for the Newark Press Information Office, Batman greets Newark residents, ages 6 and 8. Officer Gennaro Ortiz, who plays the role of Batman, was named Essex County Officer of the Year by Essex County for 2012.
