Out of the blue
St. Cloud, Minn., recently converted its regional wastewater treatment facility from using chlorine gas to disinfect treated water to using an ultraviolet light (UV) system. The UV system is inserted in the channel that treated water flows through, and it has the capacity to treat 18 million gallons per day. It results in no disinfection byproducts entering the Mississippi River, and is safer for staff and area residents than the previous chlorine process. The picture shows the system in operation.
