New York is cracking down on double dipping in the state’s school pension systems. A new law passed last month prohibits attorneys from serving as both employees and independent contractors for school districts and recent state retirees from using waivers to work at positions for which they are receiving pensions.

“While there are many cases where a retiree remains an asset to the state even after retirement, [an investigation] revealed that this process was being misused,” Gov. David Paterson said in a statement.
