Fat chance
While Chicagoans can no longer smoke in public, this month, Windy City residents also will lose the right to buy foie gras. According to the Chicago Tribune, the city council has banned the sale of foie gras, fattened goose or duck liver, ending a months-long debate between residents and lawmakers. While proponents of the new legislation, which is the first such law in the country, say producing the delicacy is inhumane to birds, others say the animals are unharmed. Alderman Joe Moore told the Tribune that the legislation is “a powerful message that we uphold the value of a civilized society.”
Dropping the bomb
In April, a newspaper promotional campaign for the action flick “Mission: Impossible III” went awry when the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department arson squad destroyed a news box, believing it contained a bomb. According to The Associated Press, the Los Angeles Times newspaper box, one of 4,500 randomly selected for the campaign, was fitted with a device that, when opened, played the film’s theme song for daily news seekers. Sometimes shaken from their positions, wires and often the device itself became visible. The devices were removed in May after the film’s opening.
