Using computers to track crime trends has helped Atlanta avoid the increase in violent crime that hit similar-size cities last year, Police Chief Richard Pennington says. Preliminary statistics from the FBI’s Uniform Crime Report for 2005 showed a 2.5 increase in violent crime nationwide, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. However, violent crime dropped 9 percent in Atlanta where unit commanders are expected to quickly shift tactics and redistribute resources on the basis of statistical trends identified by computers.
