Police departments in Massachusetts are expecting to get about $1 million as part of a national settlement with the manufacturers of a kind of bulletproof vest shown to be potentially unsafe. Toyobo, the Japanese company that makes the material Zylon used in the vests, and Michigan-based Second Chance Armor are expected to pay $29 million to departments across the nation as part of a class action settlement in the case, according to The Boston Globe. Studies show that bullets can penetrate used Zylon vests, which became popular in the 1990s as a lightweight substitute for Kevlar vests.
