A series of homicides over the weekend prompted New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin to call on the National Guard for increased protection. With the fatal shooting of five teenagers in an SUV and the stabbing death of a man during an argument over beer, New Orleans has had 53 homicides this year and Nagin wants 300 National Guard troops and 60 state police officers to patrol the city, according to the Times-Picayune. Officials are afraid that violence is on the rise in the city as it was before Hurricane Katrina. http://www.nola.com/newsflash/louisiana/index.ssf?/base/news-25/1150732757230790.xml&storylist=louisiana
