Over the past several decades, plastic pink flamingos have developed into an American cultural icon.
On Sept. 2, however, they added another feather to their plumage as Madison, Wis., named the kitsch lawn ornaments as the city’s official bird, according to Associated Press (AP).
The city chose flamingos because of a 1979 prank played by University of Wisconsin students on their dean. Members of the Pail and Shovel Party, which was in charge of the student government at the time, secretly placed 1,000 of the faux birds on Bascom Hill in front of the dean’s office. Madison Alderwoman Marsha Rummel, sponsor of the flamingo resolution, said the event “signifies something that makes us a very special place.”
