In the last decade, with gun violence on the rise and traffic deaths reaching all-time highs, public safety has emerged as a key area of focus for local government administrators. A new analysis from WalletHub published Monday ranks 182 American cities based on 180 safety-related metrics—including traffic fatalities per capita, unemployment, the number of assaults and the percentage of the population that’s uninsured.

Six of the top 10 ranked cities, which can be found in the gallery above, are located in the northeastern United States.

“No one can avoid all danger, however, and we take on a certain level of risk based on where we choose to live. Some cities are simply better at protecting their residents from harm,” reads an analysis of the findings.

Researchers compared 182 cities, including 150 of the most populated centers, along with two of the most populated cities in each state. They evaluated the cities across 41 metrics, grading each on a 100 point scale under three categories—home and community safety, natural disaster risk, financial safety and total score—with a score of 100 representing the highest level of safety. Data was drawn from the U.S. Census Bureau, the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the U.S. Fire Administration, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administratrion, and many more government, private and nonprofit organizations.
