Insecticide is helping safeguard ash trees in U.S. (with related video)

Since its accidental introduction into the U.S. from Asia, emerald ash borer (EAB) has killed millions of ash trees in North America. Research shows that, if unimpeded, the insect kills 100 percent of ash trees it infects.

Safari 20SG insecticide from Nufarm Americas helps control EAB. It is a systemic product that is taken up by the root system or through the bark, then translocated upward throughout the plant. It provides quick uptake and knockdown of a broad spectrum of invasive pests including emerald ash borer.

Research data from The Legacy Project, an EAB control and municipal outreach program, shows that Safari controls EAB effectively and prevents canopy thinning in ash trees. The Legacy Tree Project provides free treatment of infected trees for five years in selected municipalities across the United States. In return, the cities conduct outreach to residents, and they build awareness of the EAB infestation threat. The cities also conduct treatment demonstrations showing the simplicity of the treatment.

Retired arborist and municipal consultant J. Bradford Bonham provides advice and strategies for controlling EAB for several communities in Ohio and Indiana. She says it’s a simple process for a community to get geared up to control emerald ash borer with the product. “If you have a pesticide applicator on staff, all you need is a nominal investment in equipment to treat the trees. Using basal bark sprays or soil injection, treatment time per tree is typically two to five minutes,” she says.

Bonham says ash trees are workhorses of our nation’s public rights of way, and that canopy conservation is important to cities. “Today, we’re seeing trees more than 20 inches in trunk diameter that have been managed with Safari, emerging from peak EAB infestation in fantastic condition.” She says the product’s quick, reliable uptake will allow enable municipal tree crews to get quickly back to routine tree maintenance work in their communities.
