Videos get planning officials up to speed (with related video)
The International Sign Association (ISA), an Alexandria, Va.-based trade group representing the on-premise sign industry, has released the first video in a new educational series. The animated video, which runs less than three minutes, provides an overview on measuring sign area. The ISA’s video series aims to educate government planners and code officials.
“Planning officials receive very little formal education about signs, yet they are required to interact with the sign industry almost daily,” said Kenneth Peskin, ISA manager of state and local government affairs. “We wanted to create a video series that provides a brief overview of an issue of importance to the sign industry, and ultimately the local business community. While someone will not come away with everything they need to know about measuring sign area, they will be given some understanding of the many factors that influence this topic.”
The first video can be seen at the links below as well as here. Other videos in the series, which will roll out over the next few months, include factors that affect visibility, sign height and sign orientation.
The videos are one element of the educational services ISA offers for the planning community. ISA, in conjunction with The Signage Foundation and local sign associations, provides daylong training sessions including certification maintenance credits through the American Planning Association. In addition, educational webinars throughout the year aimed at planners also provide APA credits.
“Sign companies and planners each play important roles in their communities,” said Lori Anderson, president and CEO of ISA. “Working together ensures that those communities and the businesses remain strong. We have devoted significant efforts to helping planners understand the importance of signs, and to providing resources that will help them do their jobs better.”
