Alliance seeks Water Prize nominations
Wednesday, Dec. 7, marks the deadline to submit nominations for the 2012 U.S. Water Prize. The prize is awarded annually by the Washington-based Clean Water America Alliance to individuals, institutions and governments that promote or implement innovative and sustainable water management.
Applications should be submitted at the U.S. Water Prize website. Up to five winners will be honored in a ceremony held in Washington in April 2012.
“Individuals, institutions and organizations whose project or initiative advances holistic, wastershed-based approaches to water quality and quantity challenges may apply,” said the alliance in a press release. “Initiatives may be in education, public awareness, research, technology, water resource management or policy development as long as they address issues surrounding water as a finite, reusable and sustainable resource.”
Previous winners include Los Angeles, the Milwaukee Water Council, the East Alton, Ill.-based National Great Rivers Research and Education Center, the New York City Department of Environmental Protection and the Oakland, Calif.-based Pacific Institute. “The prize is an opportunity to shine a light on models that we can aspire to achieve,” said Ben Grumbles, president of the Clean Water America Alliance, in a press release. “We know there are approaches, methods and tools hidden in America’s communities that can provide cutting-edge examples of what works. The purpose of the prize is to seek those out and spread the best practices.”
