Joplin, Mo., before and after the tornado
A before-and-after video shows the damage to Joplin, Mo., from a deadly May 22 tornado. The film was composed by a local church for its Help Joplin Rebuild effort.
The video was shot from a dashboard camera and combined in a split-screen format that shows the city’s streets before the storm and after. "We found some footage that was shot driving down 20th Street in Joplin from August 2010," reads the caption for the video. "We re-shot the same footage today. The difference is amazing."
Jasper and Newton counties in Missouri, which include the Joplin, were declared federal disaster zones following the powerful tornado that tore through the area in May. The storm killed more than 150 people a little less than one month after similarly powerful storms ravaged Alabama and other parts of the South.
Updated information on the city's recovery efforts are available at Joplin's Facebook page and on the city's website. The church also is collecting donations and organizing volunteers through its site.
