Gardena, Calif., graphics technician Anthony Gonzalez took this photo of the city’s “Walkway of Flags,” which was on display from Flag Day, June 14, through the Fourth of July. On June 14 each year, the community produces a formal program from the portico of the Nakaoka Community Center (building on the left in the photo) with the raising of the flags by the police color guard, patriotic music, and some history of the flag and its meaning. The Gardena Beautiful Committee sponsors the program as well as an elementary school essay contest for fifth grade students on the subject of “What the American Flag Means to Me.” This year the city displayed all new flags donated by the Gardena Police Officers Association.
