Don’t go there!
“Public toilets are to the left. The public fountain is to the right. Please don’t confuse the two.” That could be the sign officials in New London, Conn., might erect to solve a recent issue: residents have apparently “mistaken” the city’s new waterfront fountain for a public Porta Potty, according to the Associated Press (AP).
The city was forced to turn off the water to the fountain this weekend in response to calls of people urinating, defecating and showering in the fountain water. The fountain was activated last month and features a sculpture of a whale’s tail with water spilling over it, which visitors are encouraged to run through.
City Councilor Michael Buscetto III says some people who have cut themselves also have used the fountain to rinse off blood. City Manager Denise Rose says police are developing a plan to better keep an eye on the area, according to AP.
