American Water funds 2010 Environmental Grant programs
Voorhees, N.J.-based American Water Works Co. has announced the recipients of the company’s 2010 Environmental Grant Program awards. A total of 32 projects throughout American Water’s service areas in eight states will receive grants totaling more than $128,000.
The local government projects among the grant recipients are:
• The Tazewell County, Ill., Health Department will receive $1,800 for its Green Matters Streets Clean Up.
• The Forest Preserve District of DuPage County, Ill., will receive $5,300 for its Aquatic Invasive Species program.
• Noblesville, Ind., will receive $6,000 for its Storm Water Video production project.
• The Waste Commission of Scott County, Iowa, will receive $2,000 for its Operation Medicine Cabinet project.
• The East-West Gateway Council of Government in Missouri will receive $5,000 to develop a nine-element watershed plan based on the assessments and recommendations of the Lower Meramec Source Water Protection Strategy Exchange Report.
• The Environmental Task Force of Jasper and Newton Counties, Mo., will receive $2,600 for a Shoal Creek Water Quality Testing project.
• The Chatham Township, N.J., Environmental Commission will receive $5,000 to conduct an education and outreach project in five municipalities focused on water protection, water conservation and stormwater management.
• Cherry Hill Township, N.J., will receive $1,990 to install rain barrels and a rain garden to divert unfiltered rainwater from a feeder stream of Cooper River.
• The Cape May County, N.J., Board of Agriculture will receive $1,300 for a stormwater runoff project.
• The Holmdel Township, N.J., Environmental Commission will receive $2,500 for an educational stormwater reduction outreach program.
• The Ashtabula Township, Ohio, Park Commission will receive $1,500 for environmental education at the Ashtabula State Scenic River.
• South Park Township, Pa., will receive a grant to expand the clean-up of creek beds and banks along Piney Fork and Peters Creeks.
• Lemoyne Borough, Pa., will receive a grant to support volunteers in applying markers and stencils on approximately 300 stormwater inlets.
Established in 2005, American Water’s Environmental Grant Program offers funds for innovative, community-based environmental projects that improve, restore or protect the watersheds, surface water and/or groundwater supplies in the communities it serves. “American Water is committed to ensuring water quality through testing and treatment, as well as through consumer education and community source protection programs,” said Debra Vernon, manager of Corporate Responsibility.
