Golden State motor vehicle IT applications will get up to speed under new contract
The California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) has awarded a $76 million, six-year contract to EDS to assist in modernizing the department’s IT applications and infrastructure. The department awarded the contract to EDS at the end of the fourth quarter of 2007.
Under the California DMV’s Information Technology Modernization (ITM) project, Plano, Texas-based EDS will update the department’s legacy software application technology to more current application and database structures.
The ITM project, assisted by EDS, will modernize the California DMV’s technical infrastructure, which serves the state’s driver’s license, occupational license and vehicle registration processes. According to EDS, the project will improve the state’s ability to provide DMV services essential to the Golden State’s public safety, revenue collection and economy.
Through the ITM project, the California DMV will shift from custom applications to an industry-standard, commercially available applications infrastructure. According to EDS, the modernized infrastructure will improve the California DMV’s ability to rapidly respond to future changes needed in the system.
In addition, the enhanced department IT infrastructure will improve access to department information for state DMV employees, DMV field office technicians as well as citizens and taxpayers.
EDS said that it will employ its existing work force in the Sacramento area and create additional jobs to perform work under the contract.
For this contract, EDS will use the capabilities and experience of Saber Software Inc., a provider of software and services to state governments. Last month, EDS purchased a 93 percent equity interest in Saber.
The EDS team also includes several small- and disabled-veteran-owned businesses, including several based in California. Small-business team members include Computer Deductions Inc., NexLevel Information Technology Inc., and SumRall Solutions LLC. Disabled-veteran-owned business team members are KT Consulting Inc. and Trinity Government Systems Inc. Others companies working with EDS on the contract are Datatrend Technologies Inc., Supreme Soft Inc. and Trinity Millennium Group Inc.
