Missouri recycles roof shingles into roads
The Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT) is recycling tear-off roof shingles into asphalt for roads. Mixing the shingles with liquid asphalt results in durable, rut-resistant paving for a lower price, according to MoDOT officials. MoDOT has been allowing contractors to mix old roof tiles with asphalt on road projects for the past two years. The practice saves $3 to $5 per ton of asphalt, which, in a typical project using 30,000 tons of asphalt, saves $90,000 to $150,000. Also, recycling reduces the amount of roof tiles disposed of in the state’s landfills. “By recycling asphalt shingles, we keep them out of landfills, preserve petroleum resources and lower our construction costs while maintaining high quality asphalt pavement,” said MoDOT Director Pet Rahn in a statement.
