Georgia landscaping project beats heat
Local officials in Gwinnett County, Ga., are sweating out the region’s summer drought, which threatens a landscaping and beautification project in the Gwinnett Village Community Improvement District (CID). CID officials announced in March that they would begin planting $800,000 in trees, shrubs, flowers and sod at three I-85 interchanges, unaware that the Southeast soon would experience one of the worst droughts in decades. To save the newly planted vegetation, Atlanta-based Leach Landscaping is applying a dry granular additive every five weeks as needed and a soil mist, which absorbs and retains water, from Collierville, Tenn.-based The Helena Chemical Co. The landscaping project is the first construction project in the district, which formed last year, to encourage economic development in the Atlanta suburb.
