Bomb Sniffers Provide Portal to Courthouse Security
Officials in Polk County, FL, believe they now have one of the safest courthouses in the country. Thanks go to six EntryScan bomb-sniffing devices, which were recently installed in the courthouse. The devices detect microscopic traces of concealed explosives and identify potential threats to security screeners. Designed for high-traffic sites, the devices deliver a clear visual prompt that signals courthouse visitors to enter the machine’s non-intrusive portal. Each portal measures 102 ins. high, 48 ins. wide, and 40 ins. deep, with a 78-in.-high opening for walk-through convenience. Once a person enters the portal, the machine releases several “puffs” of air, followed by analyzing the air for any residue from explosives. The complete cycle of analyzing the air sample and providing test results takes about 13 seconds. A computerized voice then tells the person when to exit the portal. If detecting possible explosives, an alarm sounds to signal security personnel. EntryScan also includes a main console (55 ins. high by 16 ins. wide), with touchscreen menus that assure easy operation by security personnel. Besides detecting multiple explosives, EntryScan can also screen individuals for hidden narcotics. Applications include government buildings, airport terminals, and correctional facilities.
