Like many other U.S. cities, Atlanta saw an increase in violent crime during the first six months of 2006. A U.S. Justice Department study shows a 4.5 percent increase over the first half of 2005 in crimes like rape and murder in the city, according to the Atlanta Journal Constitution. The report shows a 3.7 percent increase in violent crime on a national level, supporting statements by many police chiefs that drop in crime seen from 2001 to 2004 is reversing.
