A Civil District Court judge in Louisiana is backing New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin’s order to close a controversial landfill in the city. Nagin ordered the Chef Menteur Highway Landfill closed on Aug. 15 following complaints from nearby residents who say the dump is an environmental hazard, according to the Times-Picayune. The company that runs the landfill, Waste Management, had appealed Nagin’s decision to the court, but Judge Ethel Simms Julien ruled that the company should have applied for a conditional use permit earlier than the day before Nagin ordered the landfill’s closure.
