New York’s population is higher than ever, but new restrictions are keeping water use in the city lower than years past when less people lived there. In 1979, when 7.1 million people called the Big Apple home, daily water consumption peaked at 1.512 billion gallons, according to The New York Times. Now the population is 8.2 million, but in the past year daily water use has averaged 1.086 billion gallons, due in large part to new water conserving building requirements and other policy changes.
