Deputies To Begin Issuing Electronic Tickets
Two police cruisers in Pueblo County, Colo., are now equipped with technology that allows officers to issue e-tickets for minor traffic and felony violations. Built in-house, the system allows officers to swipe a driver’s license through a credit card reader-like device. License data is then displayed on a computer screen along with a prod to select the type of offense. Tickets are then printed and loaded to a county database via vehicle laptop wireless connectivity to the Web. “The problem with writing a ticket is we have five copies,” says Sgt. A.J. Colletti, head of the department’s traffic division. “Some officers may not press down hard enough and make it through [all] the copies. Or, an officer will get in a hurry and a ‘Z’ will look like a ‘2.’ Instead of that, it’s all printed from a computer program.”
