Washington, New York mayors protest security grant cuts
The mayors of Washington and New York have gone to Congress with their complaints about the Department of Homeland Security’s decision to reduce grant money for those two cities while increasing the amount given to some smaller cities. Washington Mayor Anthony Williams and New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg, along with their top police officials, told the House Committee on Homeland Security that the cuts could slow upgrades for Washington’s bomb squad and communications system and would affect a new security program for Manhattan, according to the Washington Post. Department of Homeland Security officials say Congress cut the program’s budget by 15 percent and pointed out that New York got the largest grant while Washington received the fourth largest grant.
