Los Angeles mayor, teachers unions compromise on school takeover plan

Although Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa will not get the control he wanted over the Los Angeles Unified School District, he will have a “central role” in picking the district’s superintendent. A compromise between Villaraigosa, state legislative leaders and teachers unions will give that superintendent more power over personnel, budgeting and in other areas, according to the Los Angeles Times. Villaraigosa wanted lawmakers to put control of the 730,000-student system in the hands of a panel of mayors from district municipalities. Critics have called the move a power grab.
