State Agency Uses Facial Recognition Software To Fight Take Ids
The Wisconsin Division of Motor Vehicles is employing facial recognition software to catch people trying to obtain fake IDs. The technology has caught more than 630 people that attempted to obtain a fraudulent ID since it began operating in September, according to DMV fraud prevention specialist Phil Alioto.
Illinois became the first state to employ the technology in 1999, which has resulted in the cancellation of roughly 10,000 fake IDs.
The technology compares the facial characteristics of people scanned for a new ID with photographs contained in a state database, which contains around 6 million images.
The software measures thousands of points on each face it scans, generating a unique graph and comparing it to all the other facial graphs in the database.
