New Weapons Will Make Getting Evidence Easier
The Coral Gables Police Department is purchasing laptops and radios for police cruisers with money provided from forfeiture funds designated for law enforcement purchases. The city has approved $180,000 in funds for purchasing equipment and providing training.
The laptops will cost roughly $40,000, while more than $11,000 is being allocated to computer programs that automate the department’s K-9 reports for its police dogs.
Approximately $15,000 in funding is being allocated to the purchase of a Reflected Ultraviolet Imaging System, which will aid crime scene investigations. The device will help investigators determine the presence of fingerprints and trace evidence at crime scenes. Coral Gables Police Chief Michael Hammerschmidt says the city’s crime unit will be able to gather more evidence than before with the new gear.
