The Government Accountability Office is investigating possible abuses of eminent domain powers by Los Angeles and at least five other cities, according to the Los Angeles Times. Several business owners from South Los Angeles say they plan to tell investigators from the office about instances where the city’s Community Redevelopment Agency has made inappropriate seizures of thriving businesses, such as forcing the sale of a furniture manufacturer’s property and then reselling it to a rival company. The agency says it has strong safeguards in place to prevent abuse.
