Private investors are contributing millions to the storm-ravaged Gulf Coast area and especially New Orleans. The AFL-CIO union plans to spend $700 million on affordable housing, commercial real estate and hospitals in the area, according to The Times-Picayune. Chicago-based Strategic Hotels & Resorts, owners of the Hyatt Regency New Orleans Hotel, is leading a $715 million downtown revitalization project in New Orleans. The union hopes its program will inspire more private investment in the area.
