Critics say Boston Mayor Thomas Menino’s proposed review board for complaints against the city’s police department isn’t independent enough. Menino’s five-member board would not conduct its own investigations, as some community leaders want, but would refer cases to the police department’s Internal Affairs Division, according to the Boston Globe. Defenders of the plan say a more independent board would be more public and, therefore, would discourage civilians from making complaints. Other critics want to use review boards in other cities as models for the Boston board. http://www.boston.com/news/local/articles/2006/06/07/mayor_has_plan_for_police_review/
