Some mayors say DHS grants fair
The mayors of cities that received increased grants from the Department of Homeland Security while grants to New York and Washington were cut say the process was fair. While leaders in New York and Washington complain that their cities are more likely to be targets of terrorism, Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett told The New York Times that the issue affects the entire nation. DHS officials, meanwhile, say that Congress cut the total amount of the grants from $825 million last year to $711 million this year. They also used teams of law enforcement officials to evaluate the spending proposals of the 46 cities eligible for the grants, cutting grants for cities with bad plans. http://www.nytimes.com/2006/06/01/washington/01cnd-homeland.html?hp&ex=1149220800&en=3c8507366b1afb32&ei=5094&partner=homepage
