A new study shows that low-lying New Orleans is still sinking, a fact that may have contributed to the destruction caused by Hurricane Katrina. The study, which relies on satellite images of the city, found that some parts of the city sank more than one inch per year in the three years before Katrina, according to CNN.com. That includes areas around the Mississippi River-Gulf Outlet shipping canal where a levee failed after the storm, flooding parts of the city. Also, the study indicates that the Lakeview and Kenner areas will continue to sink, causing city planners to grow concerned about what will happen in the future. http://www.cnn.com/2006/TECH/science/05/31/sinking.neworleans/index.html
