On May 9, 1,000 police officers from across the country began pedaling from Florham Park, N.J., on a four-day bicycle ride through five states to raise money and awareness for the National Law Enforcement Memorial in Washington, D.C. The Public Unity Bike Tour wound its way past Ground Zero in New York, through New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware and Maryland, and generated more than $1 million. The annual event was first organized in 1997 and has become the principal fundraiser for the memorial, which pays tribute to more than 17,000 law enforcement officers killed in the line of duty since 1792.
