New York’s Metropolitan Transportation Authority is planning to spend $25 million to combat a new wave of gang graffiti on subway trains. Whereas gang members covered the trains in spray paint during the 1970s and 1980s, today they are etching their gang symbols into window glass using knives or acid, according to The New York Times. The MTA plans to replace the windows in about 5,000 cars with windows that are coated with a protective polyester layer. http://www.nytimes.com/2006/05/23/nyregion/23mta.html
