The mayor of New Lenox village, Ill., nearly doubled his starting salary last year with compensation for attending meetings of several regional agencies. Village President Mike Smith made $7,150 in 2000, his first year in office, but last year made $17,900 due largely to the $125 per meeting compensation he got for attending 124 meetings, according to the Chicago Tribune. Smith has been under scrutiny since recently charging more than $1,400 to his municipal credit card at a Chicago strip club. http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/local/chi-0605220244may22,1,5459908.story?coll=chi-newslocal-hed
