Web Developer Charts Chicago Crime Online
Web developer Adrian Holovaty modified Google’s mapping application to allow analysis of Chicago crime data based on ZIP codes, type of crimes, and police districts. The Web site, ChicagoCrime.org, allows users to enter street addresses or specific locations to determine nearby crime statistics from the City of Chicago’s Citizen ICAM Website, and the technology even plots the crimes on a map with graphical thumbtacks.
Users then click on thumbtacks to view crime details on a new screen.
Holovaty asserts that the most obvious use of the Web site is for real estate to determine a potential neighborhood’s safety.
Chicago police officers are impressed with Holovaty’s creation, and numerous police departments are already in contact with Holovaty in order to improve their own crime statistics Web sites.
