This week’s winner is Scott Larson, assistant city engineer for Coralville, Iowa. It shows the city’s 12th Avenue reconstruction project. Although the photo has a light, ethereal quality, it is in fact the granular sub-base of a road that has been placed over compacted ground, with wire baskets placed on top at regular intervals that hold dowel bars for the pavement contraction joints. Next year, the finished product will lead to a new elementary and junior high school.
