Wastin’ away again in Mojitoville
For the first two weeks in May, a section of Buena Vista Township, N.J., changed its name to “Mojito” in exchange for $5,000 from the rum maker Bacardi. Farmers in the rural community of Richland produce mint, which is one of the ingredients in the traditional Cuban cocktail that also features rum, lime, sugar and club soda. The town erected a road sign promoting mojitos, and the company plans to use images from Richland in advertisements. The Buena Vista Township Committee authorized the new name in April and dedicated the revenue to support recreation projects.
Charged with good luck
Fayette County, Ga., Sheriff Randall Johnson had a stroke of good luck in June, picking five of six numbers in the state lottery Mega Millions drawing and winning $175,000. One day later, he won $5,400 from two lucky lottery tickets in a different game. The government claimed one-third of the sheriff’s first-day winnings, but he used the rest of the money to pay off debt. Pressing his luck, Sheriff Johnson continues to buy tickets at the same convenience store, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.
