Waukesha County fed up with drunken drivers
In Wisconsin, Waukesha County is fed up with drinking and driving. County authorities may have to resort to something drastic and something no other justice system in the state and few in the country have tried: establishing an alcohol abuse treatment court. In 2003 alone, nearly 1,000 people convicted of drunken driving in the county had been convicted at least once before. Discussion of an alcohol abuse treatment court began in earnest last summer on the Criminal Justice Collaborating Council — a panel made up of various Waukesha County officials — when county officials won federal funding to take part in the national Drug Court Planning Initiative. Officials on the planning team for the possible treatment court are still mulling features, including the criteria for treatment, monitoring, sanctions for failures or setback and rewards for successful completion. Not all drunk drivers would be admitted to the program. http://www.jsonline.com/news/wauk/jul04/245516.asp
