Voters in Michigan decide on call to prayer broadcast

Residents in Hamtramck, Mich., voted Tuesday on a ballot measure that organizers hoped would be a referendum on whether to allow mosques to issue the Islamic call to prayer over loudspeakers. While the ballot measure would not stop the amplified call to prayer, it would repeal a noise ordinance that regulates the volume and timing of the call. City officials have said that there is nothing to prohibit the broadcasting of the call to prayer itself. The City Council unanimously passed the noise ordinance in April after a mosque asked for permission to begin broadcasting the Arabic chants, traditionally issued five times a day. http://www.cnn.com/2004/ALLPOLITICS/07/20/muslim.loudspeaker.ap/index.html
