The Supreme Court has effectively killed local government attempts in Louisiana to sue gunmakers. The court refused to take up the issue on Oct. 10; its failure to review the case means the case is, for all intents and purposes, dead.
New Orleans had sued gun manufacturers, alleging that they made unsafe products. In response, the Louisiana legislature passed a law retroactively banning such lawsuits. With backing from the National Rifle Association, 26 other states have since passed similar laws.
New Orleans had appealed to the state Supreme Court, arguing that such retroactive legislation was unconstitutional. According to an Associated Press report, Tuesday’s ruling lets stand the state high court ruling that such legislation is lawful.
