Online tool for building codes needs testing

The Washington-based International Code Council (ICC) is inviting building and fire code enforcement officials to test an online tool that automates code compliance checks. SMARTcodes http://www.smartcodes.org currently allows users to check buildings for compliance with envelope and lighting provisions of the 2006 International Energy Conservation Code; search for codes, standards and interpretations; and find product information.

Future plans for the tool include incorporating more codes, and federal, state and local code amendments; allowing visitors to submit simulated permit applications for permit and code checks; and allowing visitors to code check their own building information models. ICC is inviting comments and suggestions for the tool from testers. For more information, visit http://www.iccsafe.org.
