The “creature” was soon dubbed the “Sewer Monster of Cameron Village,” after the part of town where the video was recorded. However, N.C. State University biologist Thomas Kwak told the News & Observer that the monster was actually a ball of byozoans, a type of worm that thrives in sewage and tends to bunch together in colonies. “They can get as big as the size of a watermelon,” Kwak told the News & Observer.
