The Lexington, Ky.-based National Association of State Chief Information Officers (NASCIO) has released a video aimed at encouraging government leaders to incorporate green initiatives into enterprise information technology (IT) practices. "Taking the Lead: Green IT in the States" demonstrates how such initiatives can reduce costs as well as reduce states' environmental impact.

The video instructs viewers on the use of energy-efficient hardware to reduce operating costs, software to lower energy costs and how increased online government services can contribute to greener practices. "In the face of troubling economic times, it is imperative for states and for state CIOs to be strategic in our outlook," NASCIO President and Minnesota State CIO Gopal Khanna said in a statement. "We must change the conversation and recognize that IT can help transform government. And, as state CIOs work to modernize legacy systems and to streamline the enterprise to run more efficiently by consolidating data centers, green IT initiatives are an integral part."

"Taking the Lead: Green IT in the States" can be viewed in a streaming format or ordered on DVD at NASCIO's Web site.
