Balanced budgets and cost controls, consolidating services, increasing broadband connectivity and reporting the use of American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) funds top the list of policy priorities for state chief information officers (CIO) around the country, according to a survey by the Washington-based National Association of State Chief Information Officers (NASCIO). Virtualization, networking, document management and cloud computing were the top technological priorities in NASCIO's "Top Ten Policy and Technology Priorities for State CIOs."
NASCIO conducts the annual survey of the state CIOs to identify and prioritize the top policy and technology issues facing state government. The top 10 priorities are used as input for NASCIO's programs, conference plans and publications.
Fiscal challenges among state governments are leading CIOs to focus on managing budget reductions, strategies for savings, reducing or avoiding costs and activity-based costing. Consolidating and sharing services to reduce costs are the second and third highest ranking priorities. Cyber security remains a top priority as cyber attacks continue to increase in frequency and level of sophistication.
