Orange County, Calif.'s John Wayne Airport (JWA) began a 30-day trial of the Transportation Security Administration's (TSA) “Diamond Self-Select Lanes” late last month. The lanes allow passengers to separate into different security checkpoint lines depending on their travel needs and knowledge. “Expert” lanes are for business travelers who fly frequently; “Casual” lanes are for passengers who travel less frequently but are familiar with the security screening process; and “Family/Special Assistance” lanes accommodate passengers with children or strollers, elderly passengers and passengers who may need help. The three lanes are in addition to the existing First Class screening lane. TSA has worked with more than 30 other airports to implement the self-select lanes, including Salt Lake City and Denver, and has found that they increase throughput and customer satisfaction. It’s all about "connectivity" – the connection between government and its citizens, and the real and perceived benefits that arise from that. Governments manage more effectively and efficiently through greater public input and feedback.
